5 Tips to Increase the Longevity and Preserve the Sheen of your Pearls

It’s a well-known fact that greater the nacre thickness of a cultured pearl, the better the quality and durability of the pearls themselves. However, no matter how thick the nacre coating, these coveted gemstones are still fragile and must be handled with great care. So, here are 5 maintenance tips that will ensure the pearls last and retain their sheen for much longer: Tip #1: Avoid cleaning your pearls with solutions that contain harsh detergents or ammonia. Instead, use mild soap and water solution to clean them. A good example of mild soap would be Ivory Soap Flakes. Tip #2: Avoid using abrasive cleaners or rubbing the pearls with abrasive cloth as making these mistakes will wear out the nacre coating and will leave with pearls that look plain and jaded. Tip #3: One simple tip to keep your pearls cleaner is to only wear them after you’re done applying makeup and perfume. Also, remember to take them off, especially pearl rings, before you apply body and hand creams. Tip #4: As soon as you take off your pearls, wipe them with a soft and lint-free cloth. You can either choose to dampen the cloth as you proceed to clean the pearls or wipe it dry. If you so choose to wipe it with a damp cloth, then allow the pearls to air dry before storing them away. Tip #5: When storing your pearls, avoid placing them in jewelry boxes that contain other jewelry as well as this will increase the chances of them being scratched easily as gemstones or other metallic jewelry might rub against them. Instead, place them separately in a soft bag made of non-abrasive material such as chamois and so on and so forth.
